Abstract


In May 2018 the city of Denpasar recorded a deflation of 0.03 percent with the Consumer Price Index (CPI 2012 = 100) of 129.45. The calendar year inflation rate (January - May 2018) was recorded at 1.79 percent and the year-on-year inflation rate (May 2018 to May 2017 / YoY) was 3.08 percent. Deflation was indicated by the decrease of index in the two expenditure groups, namely foodstuff category and housing, water, electricity, gas and fuel category recorded deflation of 0.88 percent and 0.02 percent respectively. While the recorded group experienced an increase in index or experienced inflation were the education, recreation and sports group by 0.54 percent; health group by 0.38 percent; clothing group by 0.26 percent; processed food, beverages, cigarette and tobacco by 0.26 percent; as well as the transport, communication and financial services group by 0.13 percent. The recorded commodities contributed to deflation in May 2018, among others: red peppers, rice, cayenne pepper, papaya, oranges, onions, and air freight rates. Out of 82 CPI cities, there were 17 cities experiencing deflation. The highest deflation was recorded in Pangkal Pinang (Bangka Belitung Islands) of 0.99 percent and the lowest recorded in Pematang Siantar (North Sumatra) by 0.01 percent. While the highest inflation was recorded in Tual (Maluku) of 1.88 percent and the lowest in Purwokerto (Central Java) and Tangerang (Banten) respectively by 0.01 percent. If sorted from the highest deflation, then Denpasar ranks 15th out of 17 cities experiencing deflation.
