Abstract

In April 2020 Denpasar Municipality recorded a deflation as deep as -0.32 percent as indicated by the decrease in the Consumer Price Index (base year 2018 = 100) from 104.76 in March 2020 to 104.42 in April 2020. Meanwhile, the inflation rate for the year runs April 2020 and year-on-year inflation rates (April 2020 against April 2019 or YoY) are recorded as high as 0.74 percent and 2.53 percent, respectively.

Of the eleven expenditure groups, four expenditure groups recorded deflation, namely group I (food, beverages, and tobacco) as deep as -0.97 percent; group VI (transportation) as deep as -0.84 percent; group XI (personal care and other services) as deep as -0.07 percent; and group III (housing, water, electriMunicipality, gas, and other fuels) as deep as -0.02 percent. Meanwhile, two expenditure groups recorded inflation: group V (health) as high as 0.52 percent and group IV (supplies, equipment and routine household maintenance) as high as 0.09 percent. Five expenditure groups recorded no change in index or stagnant, namely group II (clothing and footwear); group VII (information, communication and financial services); group VIII (recreation, sports and culture); group IX (education); and group X (food and beverage / restaurant supply).

Commodities recorded contributing to or contributing to deflation in April 2020 include, chicken meat, air freight rates, red chillies, chicken eggs, cooking oil, ground coffee, cayenne peppers, garlic, kale, and mustard greens.

From 90 CPI cities, 51 cities experienced deflation and 39 cities experienced inflation. The deepest deflation was recorded in Pangkal Pinang (Bangka Belitung) as deep as -0.92 percent while the shallow deflation was recorded in Bogor (West Java) and Semarang (Central Java) each as deep as -0.02 percent. Meanwhile, the highest inflation was recorded in Bau-Bau (Southeast Sulawesi) as high as 0.88 percent while the lowest inflation was recorded in Cirebon (West Java), Depok (West Java), and Balikpapan (East Kalimantan) each as high as 0.02 percent . If sorted from the deepest deflation, then Denpasar ranks 15th out of 51 cities experiencing deflation. [100-20200504]
